Spotify (Android, iOS). Himalaya covers both ends of the spectrum, with a free podcast player app for listeners as well as a platform for creators to publish and monetize their podcasts. We take a look at the Spektrum DX6R and the available features for the radio. Special thanks to our guest Gary Katzer for assisting us with the video and pro.
While the BigSquidRC Bash Crew doesn’t make a point of reviewing all the latest “racer” oriented gear, we do make a point out of reviewing higher-end products when possible. It is true that most bashers use products at the lower end of the price range, yet there are still plenty of them that have no problem cutting the check for the best of the best.
When we saw the initial press release for the Spektrum DX6R, we were very impressed by its feature list, but had a lot of questions. Questions like how easy is it to operate? Have they improved the range? What does it feel like to drive? Tell you what, we’ve spent months driving the DX6R, keep on reading to find out the answers to all those questions and more…

What’s In The Box- A lot of stuff. You’ve got the transmitter, 2 receivers, a charging base, a manual, an extra wheel, 2 extra grips, a bind plug, an antenna tube, a start up cheat sheet, and two wheel angle adapters.
Build Quality- Our Bash Crew could find no faults with the built quality on the Spektrum. The radio and receivers looked and felt well assembled and we had no issues out of the box.
Test Drivers- Don The Legend, Hawaiian Chris, Sam Da’ Noobie, Robbie G., Iron Michael, The RC Kid, Richie Rich, T-Mohr, and yours truly.
Test Venues- Pretty much too many to list. We’ve used the DX6R for months and taken it everywhere we’ve gone. So… lets just say around 30 different venues scattered all over Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri.
Set-up Notes- We used the DX6R in a plethora of different vehicles. Some of the vehicles we used it in included- Pro-Line PRO-MT, Tekno MT410, Losi TEN SCBE, RC4WD TF2, ECX Amp Buggy, RC4WD G2 Cruiser RTR, ECX Torment, Losi 8IGHT RTR, and a Vaterra Halix.
Feel In Hand- Guess what? The DX6R has some weight to it. No, it isn’t as heavy as its competition, but it has enough weight to feel like a high-end radio, and that is a good thing. Some of the other top-of-the-line Spektrum radios felt the same weight as their lower-end RTR radios, which gave them a cheap feel. The DX6R does not feel like that.
Weight Distribution- A bit top heavy, but not massively so.
Wheel- The radio comes with two different wheels. The radio comes out of the box with the larger of the two attached. We immediately ditched the larger wheel for the smaller one as that is what most of testers preferred. This took all of 2 minutes and was very easy to do. We were not big fans of the included foam on either of the wheels. The foam was a bit coarse to our touch. Wheel tension is adjustable, but the tension out of the box felt quite natural so that is where we left it.
Trigger- The trigger comes with ribs on the flesh side and is sized to be a narrow fit on most fingers, which we prefer. The general size and shape of the trigger on the DX6R was liked by the majority of our testers. Spring tension is adjustable so we stiffened ours up a tad bit as it felt very light out of the box. Positioning of the trigger is also adjustable and we used it at 3 different positions depending on our test driver’s taste.
Grip- The DX6R comes with 3 different grips. We ran the unit that come stock for the majority of our driving. The rubber grips have a slightly textured feel, not as smooth as some on the market, but that didn’t seem to be an issue for any of our drivers.
Overall- The DX6R is incredibly adjustable. If you don’t like any aspect of its ergonomics out of the box, simply adjust it to where it feels dialed to you. Is the DX6R the most comfortable radio we’ve ever used? No, it is not, but it is very, very close.
Ease of Use- Normally this would be a pretty easy question to answer, but with the DX6R it depends a bit on whether or not you are an avid smart device user. Because the DX6R operates much like an Android based smart device, people who use Android will instantly be dialed, those who don’t will need 10 or 20 minutes of playing with the radio to get used to it.
Features- Ummmmm…. because of the DX6R being Android based, the features are pretty much endless. You have all the typical features like trims, a bunch of model memories, dual rates and expos, etc. Then you have features like Bluetooth & Wifi connectivity, telemetry, and voice alerts. Then you have Android apps like Facebook, YouTube, a web browser for cruising BigSquidRC, ect. All high-end radios have an abundance of features, but the DX6R is on an entirely new level with what it can do.
Glitching- We used both of the included receivers and can say that we didn’t experience a single glitch during our test period. We drove near cell phone towers, under power lines, and alongside dozens of other drivers, and did not experience a single issue.
Driving Performance- On previous models, we felt like Spektrum radios didn’t have a completely flat throttle curve. For instance, some previous Spektrum models felt somewhat softer from zero input to around a quarter throttle than their competitors. The DX6R did not feel like that to us. Its throttle curve felt “normal”. From no throttle all the way up to pinned wide open, the throttle response felt perfectly linear. The same could be said about steering, it simply felt natural. When you spun the wheel a quarter turn, it felt like you got exactly a quarter of your steering travel. We also immediately noticed the speed of the DX6R, it felt as fast as anything else we’ve tried. No matter what type of input we gave the Spektrum, it gave a corresponding response at the car, seemingly with no delay whatsoever. From the best of our memory, the DX6R drove as well, or better, than every other elite radio that we have laid hands on. Drive time with the Spektrum was absolutely superb.
Radio Range- Ya know, if there is one thing that bashers have griped about for years with Spektrum radios, it would be range. We were told by the guys at Spektrum that their newest radios had much increased range, so we went out to a big open parking lot to find out. For range testing we used the SR2000 micro receiver mounted in our Pro-Line PRO-MT and we used an antenna tube to make sure the receiver’s antenna was pointing straight up. How much range did our test unit have? Well, it had more range than our parking lot. We measured a radius of 450 feet, but the Spektrum still had complete control of the truck at that distance. No, we don’t know the exact range on the Spektrum, but at a 900 diameter, it should have more than most bashers will ever use, and is much better than previous Spektrum units that we have tested.
Durability Testing- You would think after years of doing this that we would not cringe when dropping a top-of-the-line radio off the top of the drivers stand down the dirt, but we still do. It was ingrained upon us decades ago to be VERY careful with a radio. https://lawyerrenew577.weebly.com/blog/spotify-free-review-2017. We have learned in recent years that that isn’t so much the case. The DX6R also proved to be able to take some abuse without breaking. We dropped it off a 6 foot high drivers stand to terra firma with no problems. We knocked it off a tailgate a half dozen times, still no issues. The moral here is this- from what we’ve seen you don’t have to be afraid of ruining your new DX6R if it accidentally falls off your pit table.
Misc Notes-
The Spektrum comes with a unique and comprehensive model set-up wizard. When inputting a new model, the radio will ask you several questions to make sure it is perfectly set up to your application. It asks questions like truck name, the exact receiver you are using, gas or electric, reverse or no reverse, etc.
We found that the DX6R was easily tipped over forwards when sitting on a table. The solution is to either keep it on its base, or to simply lay it down leaned fully forward.
After hitting the power button it takes several seconds for the radio to boot up, pretty much like any Android device. Don’t worry though, you won’t be running late for any races as you can leave the radio turned on all day and simply turn off the transmitter app when you aren’t actually driving.
While not impossible, we found the edges of the screen hard to tap and the screen generally not as responsive as a typical Android based cell phone. First world problems, I know.
Spectrum Dx6r Spotify App Setup
How long is the run time on the Spektrum? We never found out. Why is that? Because the Spektrum has so many different ways it can be charged. It can be charged off of AC power or via USB from its base. It can also be charged via USB from a port on the top of the unit. We did run it all day several times and still had plenty of juice left, but for the most part when we weren’t driving we had it on the charger.
Yes, for the most part, the DX6R operates a whole lot just like your Android based cell phone. You tap on the screen or swipe to advance to the next step or screen. Yes, you can totally cruise Facebook with the Spektrum. Yes, you can totally watch YouTube videos and listen via the speaker on the side of the radio. Yes, you can totally cruise the web. However, it does not have a microphone or camera (perhaps on an upcoming DX7R?). We missed not having a mic to use Google Voice and would have liked a camera option when entering a new car into model memory or to simply catch some of the mayhem while out bashing. Yes, even more first world problems…
SUMMARY
Time To Bash: B If you are a non smart device user, or you are an Apple iOS person, the Spektrum will take a while to adjust to. https://lawyerrenew577.weebly.com/add-spotify-music-to-video-iphone-app.html. For users of Android devices, you will feel right at home.
Car Show Rating: B Looks are a huge matter of taste. Some of our testers loved how the Spektrum looked, while some of the others didn’t like it as much as its competition.
Bash-A-Bility: A We did some seriously stupid things to our DX6R and it works as well today as the day it came out of its box.
Range: A We’ve never given a Spektrum an “A” rating in range before, but the DX6R is no joke.
Value: A Value is an easy “A” for the Spektrum. It has superb performance, it has an absolutely insane amount of features, it comes with multiple ergonomic options right in the box, 2 different receivers come standard, and it comes stock with a large Lithium battery and charge base. It simple gives you a Huge amount of bang for the buck.
Big Squid Rating: A- The Spektrum DX6R is a multi-generational leap in technology for radio transmitters. If you are a bells and whistles guy, or a guy who wants to blow away everyone else at the track with the fanciest radio, the Spektrum DX6R is definitely for you. But hey, what about bashers? The DX6R works great for bashers too. It has an astronomical amount of features, plus with its increased range you won’t have to worry about any more walks of shame trying to get your radio to connect. Yes, we are huge fans of the DX6R and think it sets an all new standard for high-end transmitters.

Even with all the impressive technical features onboard, the plug-in’s customizability is what stands out the most among many users.
Of course, the aforementioned technical features are the main draw for professional users and serious hobbyists. The ‘smart’ metering is one of the most advanced of its kind, giving users the option to display frequency measurements in a variety of graphs and meters.
Bottom-line
MMultiAnalyzer is one of the most versatile spectrum analyzer plug-ins around. It is absolutely flawless in terms of accuracy, and the degree to which you could customize the interface is a definite plus. Even with so many capable spectrum analyzer plug-ins available, this one stands apart from the rest.
4. Blue Cat Audio Analysis Pack
Demo & Price
Blue Cat’s Audio Analysis Pack gives you pretty much everything you need to analyze and measure the frequency content of audio in one convenient package. The pack contains a dazzling array of useful plug-ins, all of which are available individually as well. Among these are two frequency analysis plug-ins, both of which provide performance equal to that of dedicated spectrum analyzers. Furthermore, these plug-ins let you can control other plug-ins–and even MIDI instruments–with the resulting measurements.
Specs and useful features
Because this is a review of spectrum analyzer plug-ins, we will focus on those specific types of plug-ins in the pack.
First up is FreqAnalyst Multi, which provides a variety of spectrum analysis features for multiple tracks. Ideally-suited for mixing and mastering, it provides a detailed view of the frequency and time of several tracks simultaneously, all from a single screen. A useful and versatile mixing tool, it will also find plenty of use as a frequency overlap detector.
The second smartphone plug-in is FreqAnalyst Pro, which adds automation generation capabilities and a 3D viewer to the standard set of spectrum analysis features. Offering much of the same functionality as the free FreqAnalyst plug-in, it provides an extremely smooth and high-resolution view of frequency as well as time.
User impressions
The individual plug-ins in the Audio Analysis Pack come with an impressive wealth of features that provide tremendous value. Most users seem sufficiently impressed with the amount of information provided, with the automation and MIDI capabilities simply being the icing on the cake. For many, the clever implementation of CC/automation generation features makes these tools so much more versatile than most standard spectrum analyzer plug-ins.
Bottom-line
The overall value provided by the Audio Analysis Pack is pretty impressive. Even if you opt to purchase just the individual spectrum analyzer plug-ins, expect to get plenty of bang for the buck.
5. Photosounder Spiral
Demo & Price
To describe Photosounder’s Spiral as a music analysis plug-in would be accurate–but it does underplay its capabilities a bit. Spiral certainly does a great job of revealing the frequency content of music, but its fresh and innovative approach to audio analysis places it so far ahead of other plug-ins that it is almost in an entirely different category.
Frequencies are displayed in a spiral (no surprise there), with a chromatic band encircling it. It is a simple enough concept to be sure, but the ability to see what is going on in your music quickly and intuitively is noteworthy. Spiral also provides many other features that give you a more detailed and informative view of your audio.
Specs and useful features
In the Spiral display, individual instruments have specific colors that represent their unique positions in the stereo mix. The plug-in also makes it possible to capture or record bits of audio into memory and play it back at slower speeds. This feature is helpful for identifying individual notes or deciphering chords.
Spectrum Dx6r Spotify App Download
You can even adjust the resolution at which stored audio plays back. You can lower the resolution for more precise time measurement for instance, or increase it when you need to analyze low-frequency instruments or complex chords.
User impressions
Users found Spiral to be as useful as an audio analysis tool as a musical aid. The bright colors and stereo separation make it possible to identify tones and notes quickly and accurately.
As a learning tool, Spiral is pretty much incomparable in the world of spectrum analyzer plug-ins. Its ability to highlight specific sections of the audio, capture it, and play it back at slower speeds are features that simply don’t exist in any other spectrum analyzer plug-in.
Bottom-line
Spiral probably isn’t the best choice for analyzing audio for mixing or mastering purposes. More a musical aid than a frequency analysis tool, it should nevertheless find a welcome place in your plug-in collection.
6. 2nd Sense Audio Mixing Analyzer
Demo & Price
2nd Sense’s Audio Mixing Analyzer hides an impressive wealth of features in a simple and modernistic interface. Like the best spectrum analyzer plug-ins, it allows the real-time monitoring of multiple tracks of audio, with the data viewable from a single window. It also identifies instances where frequencies collide and mask each other. Whether you need to pinpoint problem frequencies in specific audio tracks or simply want to check your level balances, Audio Mixing Analyzer could be a useful tool.
Specs and useful features
Like other spectrum analyzer plug-ins that allow for the monitoring of multiple audio streams, Audio Mixing Analyzer is meant to be loaded onto each track to be analyzed. All tracks will then be visible on any instance of the plug-in, each in a different color. You can also label each track as you see fit.
A vertical line will pop up on the display if any frequencies clash or overlap. You can then instantly see where two or more parts are occupying the same frequency range. Download spotify playlist to phone. An included threshold knob lets you control how frequencies clashes are displayed, with shorter instances showing up as more pronounced movements of the indicator line.
A scrolling display below the spectrum display provides real-time information on the clashing frequencies, as well as the measure and beat position where they occur. There are also illuminating blocks to the left that indicate the presence of tracks with conflicting frequency content.
User impressions
Audio Mixing Analyzer may be fairly simple, but users seem satisfied at the amount of information provided. By presenting data as text as well as visual form, users can identify frequency clashes easily, and quickly determine what steps to take to remedy potential issues.
Bottom-line
Audio Mixing Analyzer isn’t the most fully-featured spectrum analyzer around. In fact, it is one of the simplest in this rundown, without a lot of esoteric display settings and customizability options onboard. Nevertheless, it is a capable enough analyzer for the most part, and it should find plenty of use in any studio.
7. Voxengo SPAN
Demo & Price
Voxengo’s SPAN is something of a classic in the audio world, providing spectrum analysis capabilities equal to that of the best plug-ins. Remarkably, SPAN is free, which makes its professional features and capabilities even more impressive.
Even so, Voxengo saw fit to release an “extended” version of SPAN, dubbing it the SPAN Plus. Building on the already impressive features of its freeware predecessor, SPAN Plus added a static spectrum display option, PNG file export, and the ability to import and export spectrum data in real-time.
Specs and useful features
SPAN Plus has a new “mode” system that gives you the flexibility to set the display according to your preferences. This feature lets you view Fourier block size in samples, and lets you set the overlap percentage of the FFT window. You can also specify the visual slope of the spectrum, change how the secondary spectrum is displayed, and even smoothen out the spectral display as desired.
SPAN Plus makes it possible to perform a variety of analysis methods. You can compare the spectrums of different tracks at the same time, with unique colors for each channel.
User impressions
SPAN Plus especially impresses users with its ability to perform multi-track comparisons from a single window. The ability to compare EQ curves pre- and post-mastering on the same graph makes it a flexible and useful tool for mixing and mastering.
It is interesting to note that many users find the free SPAN to be just as capable as the SPAN Plus for their needs. But that is more a testament to the excellence of the free plug-in than it is a criticism of SPAN Plus.
Bottom-line
SPAN Plus is an excellent spectrum analyzer plug-in in more ways than one. Admittedly, you could get pretty much the same features in the free version of SPAN. But if the ability to compare the spectrums of two different audio sources at the same time is important to you, SPAN Plus is a no-brainer.
Spectrum Analyzer VSTs
What is spectrum analysis?
Spectrum Dx6r Spotify App Subscription
In an audio and musical context, spectral analysis is the process of measuring the frequency content of audio signals. Using a function known as “Fourier transform”, audio is broken down into its component frequencies and displayed on a screen.
Spectrum analyzers–purpose and function
Spectrum Dx6r Spotify App Sign In
Spectrum analyzers essentially provide visual representations of sound. They measure the frequencies of audio signals and display the results in a graph in real-time. The horizontal axis represents the pitch/frequency of the audio, while the vertical axis represents the amplitude. Pitch/frequency is measured in Hertz, and amplitude is measured in decibels.
By providing a visual representation of audio, spectrum analyzers make it easier to identify specific areas of the frequency range that may cause problems in the mix later on. When used in conjunction with standard audio monitoring, spectrum analyzers can enhance efficiency during the mixing and mastering processes.
Essential features
The display is the most important part of a spectrum analyzer. This is where you can see the frequency content of your audio and how “hard” specific frequencies are hitting. You can then figure out which frequencies you will have to cut or boost to fix any problem.
The best spectrum analyzers give you more specific details on frequencies and levels when you place your cursor at certain points on the display. Some plug-ins even allow you to zoom in for a more accurate view of the levels.
How to choose the best spectrum analyzer
Accuracy is, of course, one of the most important aspects of a spectrum analyzer. You will want to pay particular attention to this quality when comparing the different spectrum analyzer plug-ins available.
You should also look into the option to set the FFT block size a few different ways. This feature allows you to view frequencies at different resolutions, which could help you identify problem areas in specific frequency ranges.
One important thing to keep in mind is that spectrum analyzers can not–and should not–take the place of proper monitoring via speakers or headphones. By all means, use spectrum analyzer plug-ins for an added perspective while mixing or mastering. But don’t forget that what ultimately matters is how the music sounds–not how it looks.
